FROM ALASKA WITH LOVE

Monday, June 15th, 2009

This will be my final post from Alaska.  I’m busy packing up things and cleaning my apartment.  In a few hours I will shut off my internet and return the equipment and be living on the darkside once again.  Not really much to report, so I’m just going to post a picture of my set up for UFC 99.  The carpet cleanin guy was there so I had to watch it in the kitchen, and of course everything had to be off my carpet so my kitchen is stuffed with crap.  Pretty sweet huh?

ALMOST READY TO GO

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Yes, I am still alive.

Things have gotten very hectic for me lately so I haven’t been able to put the man hours into the website like I wanted to.  Here’s a quick rundown; I’m moving on Monday, my last day of work is today, took Darci to the vet, mailed my Ruger home today, sold my bed and my bike (sold the bike for $15 profit, heh suckers), packing up the apartment, getting carpets cleaned tomorrow (unnecessary expense in my lease), watching UFC 99 tomorrow, lots of junk to go to the Salvation Army, must drop off recycables (or possibly just throw away if I’m lazy), and been playing mad poker lately to unlock my $50 bonus that expires at the end of this month (unlocked it last night, bankroll is almost at 8x my investment), and my fight has been canceled by the promoter.

More news this weekend before I hit the road.

FIGHT PREDICTIONS - UFC 99

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

My picks are in bold.

  1. Wanderlei Silva v Rich Franklin - Unfortunately Wandy’s record against top tier opponents isn’t the best.  I am picking against my favorite fighter.  I hope I am wrong. I had Wandy winning the fight, but it could have gone either way.
  2. Cheick Kongo v Cain Velasquez - I think Velasquez is real deal, but I will side with popular opinion here and go with Bongo Kongo.  I felt like a genius for the first 15 seconds of each round.
  3. Mike Swick v Ben Saunders - SWICKFU all over Saunders.  Saunders gameplan of hugging didn’t really work out for him.
  4. Marcus Davis v Dan Hardy - Dan Hardy has a future, but Marcus Davis is getting in the way.  I think Davis got robbed.  But I’m glad Hardy looked good.
  5. Spencer Fisherv Caol Uno - Uno is washed up.  I gave the decision to Uno. SNOOZER FIGHT.
  6. Cro Copv Mustfa Al-turk - I believe in CRO COP.  CC looked okay, too bad he’s heading to Dream.
  7. Terry Etimv Justin Buchholz - Don’t let me down Etim.  And he didn’t.
  8. Paul Taylor v Peter Sabotta - This is my upset pick of the show.  Sabotta seems like a finisher while Taylor should be called Decision Dan.  I guess I shouldn’t pick fighters I have never seen fight.
  9. Paul Kelly v Rolando Delgado - NO PICK
  10. Denis Stojnic v Stefan Struve - NO PICK
  11. John Hathaway v Rick Story - NO PICK

5-3 on the night (36-24 UFC, 56-39 All time).

1-0 in the main event (4-4 UFC Main Events, 7-6 All time).

FIGHT PREDICTIONS - STRIKEFORCE & WEC

Friday, June 5th, 2009

My picks are in bold.

STRIKEFORCE

  1. Robbie Lawler v Jake Shields - Lawler is the bigger guy here and better striker.  Working with Matt hughes he should have a nasty sprawl.  I think he’ll stuff Shields takedowns in a snoozer.  A freakin’ guillotine man?!  C’mon.
  2. Nick Diaz v Scott Smith - I realize I’m going against the popular opinion here, and it’s not that I actually like Scott Smith.  I think this is the 3rd straight fight where I (correctly) picked Smith.  It was a gamble picking Smith, the real problem is I no longer hate Diaz as much as I used too.
  3. Andrei Arlovski v Brett Rogers - Arlovski all day.  Unless he goes for his reliable knuckle head move that he does in every fight.  Sigh…
  4. Kevin Randleman v Mike Whitehead - Whitehead will just lay on Randleman in a snoozer.  Randleman’s been out of the game too long.  I wish Randleman would have knocked out Mr. Whitehead because Whitehead sucks.
  5. Phil Baroni v Joe Riggs - I honestly can’t pick a winner here.  Rooting for Baroni (maybe the first time in my life).  Riggs looked like a complete fighter.

WEC

  1. Mike Brown v Urijah Faber - It was a fluke the first time around.  Not saying Brown is a chump, but it’s Urijah we’re talking about here.  Apparently Mike Brown is the real deal.
  2. Jose Aldo v Cub Swanson - I believe the Aldo hype.  FLYING KNEE - YAY!
  3. Josh Grispi v Jens Pulver - I wish Pulver would win but he just sucks so bad right now.  Damnit Pulver, give us one more win before you retire.
  4. Donald Cerrone v James Krause - I believe in the Cerrone hype.  The hype lived up.

***4-4 on the night, and 51-36 all time.***

DAMN BIKE

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I got on the bike tonight after work.  I wanted to do 12 miles but things just didn’t go my way.  First there was a marathon being run on a portion of my normal bike route, then my bike is a piece of junk and is starting to skip links really bad, then some D-bag blocked the bridge so I had to come to a complete stop.  I was disappoint.  Ended up doing 6 miles straight.  Average speed was 12 mph.  I was pleased with that.

I tested my resting heart rate yesterday and got a 66 beats per minute.  Here’s how you test yours

  1. Take your pulse
  2. Count the number of heart beats in ten seconds (use a clock)
  3. Then multiply your number by 6
  4. That equals your number of heart beats per minute.

EXAMPLE

11 beats per ten seconds.  11 X 6 = 66 beats per minute.

RINSE AND REPEAT

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Warm Up:

  1. Stretching.
  2. Shadow boxing.
  3. Light jog.

Work out:

  1. Sprints - Found an area about 50 yards long and sprinted the length and then walked back.  Rinse and repeat.   Did about ten.  Nothing major but a good work out nonetheless.

Notes:

I felt a lot better today.  I didn’t eat until after my workout, so I didn’t have any crap in my system to bog me down.  Then I did a real warm up.  After stretching I did several hard rounds of shadow boxing.  I broke a good sweat and carried that over to the light jog on my way to the field.  Got down to the field and felt good sprinting.  Got my heart rate up, and some good sweat starting rolling.  My legs felt great, which was surprising.  Feels good to do some sprinting.  I hadn’t done any sprinting since Gimp-Legs-Davis smoked me by 2 seconds on the 300 yard dash in the police academy.  It’s okay because I got him by 2 seconds in the mile and half run.

Weight was 233lb this morning.  I don’t expect to be lower than that tomorrow.  And FYI, when I moved up to Alaska I was at the top of the 220’s, just below 230lbs.  So not a lot of weight gain, I just feel like maybe I’m not as strong cardio and coniditioning wise as I was when I got up here.
