BLACK FRIDAY

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

I went over to Michael’s house for Thanksgiving, and to watch the Titans game, since I wasn’t going to my Mom’s until Friday.  After we ate lunch we decided to take a ride in my truck past the Best Buy around 2:00 p.m. to see if any people were getting in line yet.  The Best Buy near my apartment had about twenty people in line, most wanting the laptops, which is what we were both looking for.  I want a laptop for the move, my desktop is junkie and a laptop would be much more feasible.  Michael was getting a laptop for his girlfriend’s father.

We decided to get our gear (jackets, chairs, heater, portable dvd player) and haul ass over to the Best Buy in Franklin to get in line so we could get our laptops.  We got there just before 3:00 p.m. and were numbers fourteen and fifteen (of a guarenteed fifteen) in line for the laptops.  Thankfully (maybe) there was a lady who was power-trippin’ from her crossing guard job that was trying to organize a list and order of who was buying what.  We threw our names down on the list, made a list of our own, had everyone in front of us sign it and that was pretty much a guarentee that we were getting our laptops.  So we pulled out our chairs and sat down at the end of line and began the wait for 5 a.m. when the store opened.

We played a forty minute game of War (the card game), in which I lost.  I felt like I made a valiant effort to stay alive even though I wasn’t dealt any aces.  After that game we didn’t touch the deck of cards again until the kid of the crossing guard lady who was in the tent right next to us showed us a magic trick.  The magic trick was good, I couldn’t figure it out and he could consistently show me my card.  Good magic, uncool kid.  He was alright until he wouldn’t leave me alone.

For the next three hours me and Michael sat at the end of the line with no one showing up behind us other than two young kids who eventually left after about an hour or so.  Around 6:00 p.m. more people started to show up.  First was a black girl, named O’nassi (sp?), followed by two sisters, Renna and Danya, and then a guy in a Titans hoodie and a St. Louis Cardinals fan.  After them no one showed until 8:00 p.m. then gradually the line started to increase and wrap around the building.

Me and Michael killed the rest of the night by ordering pizza, throwing a football 2x, watching The Forty Year Old Virgin (until the battery died about 2/3 of the way through), and talking to O’nassi, Renna, and Danya.  O’nassi brought up some interesting random topics (transgender youtube videos… wtf) and named dropped like nobody’s business.  Renna and her sister Danya, who was like thirteen, were cool.  They called their other sister and who brought them a football (for us), and a soccer ball for them.  So while me and Michael tossed the football around with Titans Hoodiey Guy, Renna and Danya kicked a soccer ball back and forth.

I feel like I need to stop the blog right here and dedicate the next paragraph to Renna.  She was awesome.  She had a personality and didn’t seem to take offense to the majority of the inappropriate things I said.  She was very good looking too.  There was something different about her though, she had a kind of hotness to her that is very different from other good looking girls.  Her style and personality just gave off a kind of respectable sexiness that other girls lack.  To me there is a difference between being hot and being sexy.  Spending those twelve hours with her made me regret, just for a minute, that I was moving to Alaska.  I don’t know if I’ll ever talk to her again, but she sure did make an impression on me.  I’m going to try and myspace/facebook stalk her down sometime.  ***EDIT*** I found her last night on facebook.  It’s spelled Rena, not Renna.  I didn’t send a friend request, cause that would really be stalkerish.

Around 3:00 a.m. employees started showing up and we were growing tired of heckling Cory, Renna’s friend who showed up at 1:00 a.m. to keep her company.  He was a cool enough guy and we had fun giving him a hard time.  Then when they started handing out vouchers for the big ticket items is when it became every man for himself.  People in the very front of the line were taking vouchers for every kind of laptop and accessory they were giving out.  There was a group of three Asains up front whose final combined total was around $25,000.

I got my voucher, went in the store and stood at the register until it was 5:00 a.m. At 5:00 on the dot, I signed my reciept and headed out the door into the parking lot where about 300 more people were waiting to get into the store.  They had let all the laptop people with vouchers in first, niice!  So I was the FIRST person out the door and I had gotten what I wanted.  It had only taken me fourteen hours.  Michael sooned followed and then we were back on our way home to sleep in the rest of the day.

Of course, I had to get up and go to my Mom’s for Thanksgiving so I only got to sleep for about six hours.  Also, some religious people with t-shirts that said “What’s Up Facebook” came by to interview us.  They said we could watch our interview here, but the crazy crossing guard lady took offense to something and may have convinced them not to post our video.  As of this blog, our video is not up yet.  Here’s a few pics of the night.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Hey, just wanted to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving!  I’ll be heading over to Michael and Nicole’s here in a little while for some grub.  Then me and Michael are camping out in front of Best Buy all night so we can get some laptops in the morning.  Should be good fun.  I’ll throw up some pics after I get back from my Mom’s tomorrow.  Have a good one.

DRILLING THE SHOT

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Jiu-Jitsu (Gi) - Taught by Jim Casey

Warm-Up

  • Rolled with Milad for about ten minutes before warm-ups began.  Back and forth battle with me on top mostly.
  • A few jogs around the mat, bear crawls, shrimp-escapes, shrimp-escape-to-belly, and walking lunges.
  • A few minutes of streching.

Technique

  • Drilled the double leg takedown shot.
  • Penetrate deep with front leg, follow up with behind leg and drive in with power.  Both hands behind the knees and drive to the side for the finish.
  • Drilled the single leg takedown shot.
  • Penetrate deep with front leg, snatch up their front leg between your knees.  Keep your arms hugged around their leg with your head burried low into them while keep pressure to keep them off balance.  Move your inside leg to the outside with your other leg while maintaining two points of contact with your arms.  Then tree-top their leg up with your knee and underhook their leg, then stand up.  Sweep their planted leg forward, or time their hop and sweep them backwards.

Rolling / Sparring - 3×5min rounds

  • Partnered with Milad again.  He took my back while standing and eventually dragged me down.  He couldn’t sink both hooks in and I turned back into him.  I passed into side control, and took mount only to be reversed.  Another back and forth battle with no submissions.
  • Went with Patrick.  Shot for a double leg takedown and hit it.  Passed into half-guard.  I did a good job keeping his shoulders flat on the mat.  He managed to scoot underneathe me and tried to come out the backdoor but I snagged his arm on the way out to finish with a modified straight arm bar.  Went again with me starting in his guard.  Passed to half guard and got swept.  I hit an omoplata and turned it into a kimura when he didn’t roll out of it and I didn’t sit up on it.
  • Went with another guy but didn’t catch his name.  He shot for a double leg takedown and got it.  We were in closed guard and I had an overhook, he was doing a great job defending my free arm.  He passed to half guard and I tried to dive underneathe for a sweep.  He sprawled out and took north-south and finished me with a kimura.  We went again and I shot for a double leg takedown.  I probably could have hit it but I didn’t power through it.  He started controlling my head and working a guillotine.  I turtled up to defend and he eventually rolled and submitted me with an anaconda choke.

It was a good class.  I think my shots are really starting to come together and I’m beginning to almost be comfortable attempting one.  My cardio felt really good even though I hadn’t done any jiu-jitsu in about a week and a half.  I ran three times in the past week, so maybe that’s what helped me out.  My knee is still feeling pretty sore, but doesn’t really affect me until after.  Had I realised that this week was Thanksgiving week I wouldn’t have been so lazy and would have made class last week.  Now I’m done for the week and have to wait until Saturday when I go to Murfreesboro to roll with Mike, Tom, and Jason from my old school.

GRACIE BARRA ALASKA

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

There is a Gracie Barra school in Alaska that I see myself joining.  Jiu-jitsu is good for my soul and I can’t ever see myself giving it up.  When I get up to Alaska I want to take my training to a new level.  I want to begin striking again.  I want to really get good a jiu-jitsu.  I feel like I am pretty good right now, but there are a few problems that are holding me back.  I’m over weight.  Yes, I’m a fatty and it’s killing my game.  I keep thinking back about 2 years ago when I got really skinny was and have figured out what is different between now and then.

Then

  • I just started doing jiu-jitsu and muay thai.  It was a new workout that my body wasn’t used too.
  • I was running a lot more.  It relieved stress and I enjoyed running.
  • I moved off campus and stopped eating craploads of buffets everyday.
  • I didn’t have cable, so I didn’t watch TV.
  • I read books (hard to eat and read at the same time).
  • I was working full-time in a hot warehouse.

Now

  • I have cable and internet.
  • Being in the police academy I started to eat fast food regularly with the guys.  Then started to eat it regularly on my own.
  • Got away from jiu-jitsu and muay thai (although I’ve gotten back into jiu-jitsu recently).
  •  I moved away from most my friends so I’ve been spending more time alone, being fat.

I intend on changing my lifestyle for the better when I get up to Alaska.  No more pizza rolls and McDonald’s for me.  Just old fashioned exercise.  There will be no cable, I might not even take my TV.  I think I’m going to go in-depth about everything later on.  But this will do for now.

FIGHT PREDICTIONS - STRIKEFORCE: DESTRUCTION

My picks are in bold.

  • Renato Sobral v Bobby Southworth - Submission RD 1
  • Scott Smith v Terry Martin - Unanimous Decision
  • Yves Edward v Duane Ludwig - Submission RD 1
  • Kim Couture v Lina Kvokov - Unanimous Decision
  • Joe Riggs v Luke Stewart - TKO RD 2

***UPDATE***

I picked all the winners but I didn’t get any finishes right.  Next time I’d like to get more rounds and finishes right.  And maybe win something, like a gift certificate or volcano tacos.

I’m 5-0 on the night and 8-6 all time with one perfect card.  I’m down five Volcano Tacos to Michael due to my disasterous picks for UFC 91.
